The Yosakoi  dance is highly energetic, combining traditional Japanese dance movements with modern music. The choreographed dances are usually performed by large teams.

  • The Hirosaki  Neputa  festival in northern Japan. These floats are made from wooden frames which are covered with rice paper that has been hand painted. The floats are generally fan-shaped, with two flat sides. One portrays a historical battle scene with samurai fighting while the reverse shows a beautiful woman, often framed by scenes of death. The floats are pulled and some carried through the streets over a period of one week, each summer. Each float has members that do the pulling and carrying and other members that play the flute, drums, and other musical instruments.

In northern Japan the small village of Inakadate plants five different varieties of rice all different colours to produce.   "Rice field art"<br />
<br />
 This is an annual event and attracts many thousands of tourists. Every year in autumn they have a different subject matter to be viewed. <br />
<br />
 The design is done by an artist and then in a computer the design is calculated and adjusted to what it would look like when it is viewed from the town hall watch tower. Then the design is marked out in the rice fields.
