Floats and drums
The Hirosaki Neputa festival in northern Japan. These floats are made from wooden frames which are covered with rice paper that has been hand painted. The floats are generally fan-shaped, with two flat sides. One portrays a historical battle scene with samurai fighting while the reverse shows a beautiful woman, often framed by scenes of death. The floats are pulled and some carried through the streets over a period of one week, each summer. Each float has members that do the pulling and carrying and other members that play the flute, drums, and other musical instruments.
