Under this wonderful old cherry tree is an altar where Japanese people tie their fortune papers that they have bought from the shrine.
Fortune papers (Omikuji) Japan. Japanese people buy these fortune papers and then attach them to special holders like this one in the photo, or attach them to trees, cracks in the wall of the shrine or stuff them into the statues.
